Branch County Parole and Probation

Parole and probation both place a person in the community under rules, but they begin in different ways. The Michigan Parole Board is the sole paroling authority for felony prisoners committed to the Michigan Department of Corrections. Parole means a person has left prison while the state sentence and MDOC supervision continue. Probation is imposed by a sentencing court and may be ordered without a state-prison term, after a jail term, or as part of another lawful sentence.

That difference determines where to verify the record. MDOC’s Offender Tracking Information System, known as OTIS, includes current prisoners, parolees, probationers, and most people discharged from MDOC within the prior three years. It expressly excludes county-jail-only prisoners. A person who left Branch County Jail after bond may have no OTIS record at all. In that case, the court register and signed order are the better sources.

Parole

Conditional release from prison while the person remains under MDOC supervision.

Probation

Court-ordered community supervision that does not itself prove a prior prison release.

Discharge

The end of MDOC jurisdiction on the sentence shown, not merely release from a building.

Absconder

An OTIS status indicating failure to report; the location may be the last supervising office.

Check Branch County Post-Release Supervision

Use identity and agency together. A matching name is not enough, especially when the record contains a common surname. The six-digit MDOC number is the most exact search key. When it is not known, OTIS accepts a last name and provides filters. The result should be read from the overall status down to the individual sentence entries.

1. Open the official OTIS landing page and review its scope before launching the search.
2. Enter the MDOC number when available. Otherwise search the current legal surname and first name, then use identifying filters.
3. Match date of birth and physical details. Do not rely on name alone.
4. Read the status and location first. Look for PAROLE, PROBATION, ABSCONDER, or DISCHRG.
5. For parole, confirm the Date Paroled and the office or place supervised. For probation, compare OTIS with the sentencing court record.
6. If the entry appears wrong, contact the listed supervising office. Sentence or conviction errors generally begin with the sentencing court.

OTIS displays state corrections information, not a complete Branch County release ledger. It can show a person paroled from Lakeland Correctional Facility or another MDOC prison. It cannot confirm that a jail-only detainee left Branch County Jail. For that local event, call the jail, check MiCOURT, or request the booking and release sheet.

Note: Record the date of every OTIS check because supervision status and office assignments can change after the screen is viewed.

Branch County Supervision Office

Branch County has a combined MDOC parole and probation office in Region 8. It provides the local verification and correction path for state supervision. The office is in the county courthouse complex, which is useful when an OTIS entry and a Branch court order need to be compared. It is not the Branch County Jail records desk and should not be called to confirm an ordinary bond release.

Ask about the record or appropriate office route. Do not ask office staff to predict enforcement steps or disclose information that is not public.

Branch County Supervision Status Fields

Several OTIS fields must be read as a set. Overall status identifies the person’s current relationship to MDOC. Location or place supervised identifies a prison or field office. Date Paroled records the actual transition to parolee status. Discharge information reflects the later end of MDOC jurisdiction. Earliest Release Date and Maximum Discharge Date answer date questions for a prisoner, not current supervision by themselves.

A discharge certificate is stronger proof than a search-result screenshot. For an identified document, use MDOC’s FOIA route. Request the discharge certificate, parole order or Notice of Decision, and relevant date or reason rather than asking the agency to research an open-ended question. Public access and redaction depend on the record.

Note: OTIS normally stops displaying a person three years after the latest MDOC supervision discharge, so nonappearance may reflect age rather than error.

Branch County Parole Violations

Conditions are the rules stated in the parole or probation order. They may concern reporting, approved residence, travel, treatment, contact, or other case-specific duties. The individual order controls. A general description cannot show whether one person complied, and a status label should not be read as the full violation record.

An ABSCONDER status means the person failed to report as required. It does not provide a reliable present location. The official Branch County sweep found no general Sheriff warrant or parole-absconder search. A narrow Friend of the Court nonsupport page is not a general warrant database. Readers should not attempt to locate, approach, or enforce against a person based on an online status.

When the status or office appears incorrect, supervision information should be raised with the listed MDOC office. A conviction or sentence error usually starts with the sentencing court because much OTIS content comes from court records. MiCOURT Case Search can identify docket entries. Adult cases begin in Branch 3-A District Court, while a qualifying felony proceeds to 15th Circuit Court after bind-over. The signed order is stronger than a short docket label.

Branch County Parole Board Records

The Michigan Parole Board decides parole for MDOC felony prisoners. Eligibility is not approval, and a positive decision is not the same as physical release. The sequence is distinct: a hearing or review may occur, the Board may grant or deny parole, release staff may complete placement work, Date Paroled records the custody transition, and discharge may occur much later.

Michigan does not publish a complete calendar for all routine parole interviews. The public hearing registration list concerns event-driven lifer, commutation, and pardon hearings, not all routine parole matters or parole-violation cases. Notices are commonly posted about two weeks to 30 days before a covered hearing. No comprehensive official person-level decision search was found.

For an individual Notice of Decision, contact the Parole Board or make a focused MDOC records request. OTIS may reveal the practical result when status remains PRISON or changes to PAROLE, but it does not supply the Board’s full written reasoning. Branch County Release Boundaries

Coldwater contains both the Branch County Jail and Lakeland Correctional Facility, so the custodian must be identified before a supervision search begins. The jail is run by the Branch County Sheriff’s Office. Lakeland is a state prison run by MDOC. OTIS covers the state system but excludes a person whose only custody was a county-jail stay.

A transfer from the jail to MDOC is not a community release. A move from Lakeland to another prison is also a transfer. Parole means release from prison with continuing state supervision. Probation can follow a Branch court order without any state-prison confinement. A Branch County jail release can occur with no post-release supervision if the relevant orders impose none.

For a jail-only event, use the official Branch County Jail contact and ask whether the person remains held, was released to the community, or was transferred. Branch County Supervision Discharge

Supervision ends through a recorded discharge or another lawful termination, not merely because a person has spent time in the community. MDOC guidance states that discharge can follow successful completion of parole or probation, reaching the maximum term without parole, or death before completion. The meaning depends on the sentence and status line.

In OTIS, DISCHRG means MDOC no longer supervises the person on that sentence. It does not necessarily mean the person walked out of prison on the discharge date. The physical prison-release date may be the earlier Date Paroled. Likewise, completion of a Branch County jail term may leave probation in place, while completion of probation may later close the court supervision layer.

For documentary proof, request the specific discharge certificate or termination order from the responsible agency or court. The strongest practical state packet pairs the OTIS transition with the MDOC document. For probation tied to a Branch court case, read the register of actions and obtain the signed discharge order from the clerk when exact legal proof is needed.
