Branch Federal Release Scope
No federal prison was identified in Branch County. The nationwide Federal Bureau of Prisons system still matters because a person with a Branch County connection may enter federal custody elsewhere. The BOP houses sentenced federal prisoners and maintains a public locator for people held or released in its system from 1982 to the present. That scope differs from Branch County Jail, which handles local bookings, and Lakeland Correctional Facility, which is a Michigan state prison.
A federal path can begin before BOP placement. The U.S. Marshals Service manages many federal detainees who await proceedings, sentencing, or transport. USMS may use contract custody, but it does not offer a public name locator equivalent to BOP. A person who leaves Branch County Jail on a federal hold may therefore be transferred to USMS custody and not yet have a searchable BOP facility. The local jail release sheet and federal court docket bridge that gap.
| Custodian | Primary record path |
|---|---|
| Branch County Jail | Jail call, Sheriff release sheet, and local court record |
| U.S. Marshals Service | Federal docket and USMS contact; no public name locator |
| Federal Bureau of Prisons | BOP Inmate Locator and BOP records request |
| Michigan Department of Corrections | OTIS for state prisoners and supervision |
| ICE | ICE Online Detainee Locator for immigration custody |
Search Federal Release Records
The BOP Inmate Locator is the public starting point. A register number gives the most exact search. Name searches should be matched carefully with age, race, sex, and any other displayed identifiers. The locator covers federal inmates released after 1982. It does not include county-jail-only detention, Michigan state prison custody, or every person currently managed by USMS before BOP designation.
- Open the official BOP locator and choose a number search when the register number is known.
- Otherwise, enter the full name and use the available demographic refiners.
- Open the result only after matching the identity details, not the name alone.
- Read the location and Release Date together.
- For a past Release Date with no BOP facility, record the date and note that BOP custody ended.
- Check the federal docket or another custodian when the person may have transferred elsewhere.
A future Release Date is BOP's projected date. It can change. A past date with no facility location indicates that BOP reports release from its custody on that listed date. BOP cautions that the person might be held by another correctional or criminal-justice system. An `UNKNOWN` release date can also appear. Do not translate any one display into “free from all custody.”
Federal Release Result Fields
A BOP result commonly identifies the person, register number, age, race, sex, current location if in BOP custody, and Release Date. The exact display can change. The register number matters because names are not unique. A date should be saved with the access date and source. If the locator shows no location and a past release date, the practical meaning is that the BOP custody episode ended on the reported date.
The locator does not state the full legal story. It may not explain whether supervised release began, whether another case produced a hold, whether civil immigration custody followed, or why a date changed. Supervised release is a federal court-ordered period after imprisonment and differs from Michigan parole. The federal judgment and docket provide the sentencing and supervision framework. The releasing institution or BOP records can document agency action.
- Register number
- The federal identifier used for the most exact BOP search.
- Release Date
- A future projected date or a past BOP custody-ending date, depending on the record.
- Supervised release
- Court-ordered federal supervision after imprisonment, separate from BOP confinement.
- USMS transfer
- Movement into Marshals-controlled federal detention before or outside BOP placement.
Branch Jail Federal Transfers
A person can disappear from Branch County Jail because another authority took custody. The Sheriff's booking and release record should be requested with the release or transfer date, reason or code, and receiving agency when releasable. If it names USMS, describe the event as release from Branch County custody to the U.S. Marshals Service. That phrasing does not imply a community release.
The Branch County adult criminal courts do not replace the federal docket. A local record may show the event that led to the jail stay or local hold, while the federal court record shows federal charges, detention orders, judgment, and later proceedings. Search by case number when possible and read the chronology. A detention or remand order can explain why the person remained in federal custody after leaving the county jail. Remand means the court ordered continued custody.
If BOP has no result, check whether the person is still pretrial, was never sentenced to BOP, uses a different name form, or entered a custody episode outside BOP's public coverage. Contact the responsible federal court or USMS office with a focused inquiry. Nonappearance alone proves nothing.
Request Federal Release Proof
For documentary confirmation, use the BOP FOIA route and ask for identified, releasable records. Include the full name, register number, facility if known, and a narrow date range. Specify the release-related document or data sought, such as the recorded BOP release date, releasing institution, or custody transfer information. A precise request is more useful than asking the agency to research a person's entire history.
The Privacy Act and FOIA can affect access to person-specific federal files. Identity, consent, exemptions, and redactions may matter. BOP need not create a new explanation if no existing record answers the question. If the person was under USMS rather than BOP, route the request to USMS. If a federal court order is the key document, request it from the court. Each office should be asked only for records it created or controls.
| Proof needed | Best source |
|---|---|
| BOP custody end date | BOP locator plus an identified BOP record |
| Federal detention authority | Signed federal court order |
| Pre-BOP transfer | Sending jail record, USMS record, and federal docket |
| Supervision term | Federal judgment and probation office record as lawfully available |
Note: A screenshot is a useful lead, while a custodian-produced record or certified court order carries stronger evidentiary weight.
Why Federal Release Dates Change
A future BOP date is not a promise. Sentence computation, earned time under applicable federal law, court amendments, disciplinary action, detainers, consecutive sentences, and data correction may affect the result. The specific judgment and BOP calculation control. Do not calculate a person's release by subtracting a generic percentage from the sentence.
A past date can also need context. A person released from BOP may begin federal supervised release. Another jurisdiction may take custody on an outstanding case. ICE may assume civil immigration custody. A hospital, residential reentry setting, or other lawful placement may create additional questions that the one-line locator result does not answer. The federal docket and receiving-agency record show the next step where it is public and releasable.
Attach the agency to every event: released from BOP custody, transferred to USMS, entered supervised release, or moved to ICE custody. This disciplined wording is especially important in Branch County because local jail, state prison, and federal systems can all touch a person at different stages.
Federal Release Contact Routes
The BOP locator and FOIA page are national services. There is no Branch County BOP facility contact card because no federal prison was found in the county. A facility-specific inquiry should use the institution shown in the BOP result. Questions about a person not yet designated to BOP may belong with USMS or the federal court instead.

For a transfer that began at the local jail, Branch County Jail is at 379 Keith Wilhelm Drive in Coldwater, phone 517-278-2325. Ask only whether the person remained, entered the community, or transferred and request the receiving agency where releasable. The county office cannot certify later BOP release.
After a Federal Release
Federal supervised release is imposed and governed by the federal court. It is not Michigan parole, and the MDOC Branch County Parole/Probation office does not manage it. The judgment states the term and conditions. A BOP Release Date confirms a prison-custody event but does not itself show that supervision ended. Court records are the right source for later supervision orders.
If immigration custody follows, use the ICE locator and federal immigration contact routes. If state custody follows, use OTIS. If a county warrant caused transfer, use that county's custodian and court. The Branch County released-inmate search path provides the local fork, but the nationwide BOP and federal court records remain controlling for the federal episode.
No official local federal release feed, fixed Branch County release hour, or Branch-based BOP release office was established. Those gaps should not be filled with state-prison or county-jail procedures.
