Branch Jail Release Outcomes

A departure from Branch County Jail is not always a return to the community. A person may leave after posting bond, receiving a personal-recognizance order, completing a county sentence, receiving time served, or obtaining another court-ordered release. Staff may also transfer the person to the Michigan Department of Corrections, another county jail, the U.S. Marshals Service, or another authority with a valid hold. The jail record should identify which outcome occurred. A bare statement that the person is no longer at the jail leaves the most important question unanswered.

Bond is a pretrial release mechanism. It does not mean the charge was dismissed or that the person was acquitted. Likewise, a dismissal in one case does not clear a separate warrant or detainer. A detainer is a request by another agency to hold or transfer a person. Read the physical custody record beside the signed court order. The court explains the legal authority, while the jail records the actual exit or transfer.

Confirm Branch Jail Release

The official Branch County Sheriff corrections page did not provide a public roster, booking search, release archive, or 24-hour and 72-hour release list when the local research was completed. OTIS is not a substitute because MDOC says its search excludes county-jail-only prisoners. Begin with the jail when the custody episode was local. Have the full name, a date of birth or booking number, and an approximate booking date ready so staff can distinguish people with similar names.

1. Call Branch County Jail and ask whether the named person is held, released to the community, or transferred.
2. Ask for the recorded release or transfer date and the receiving agency when that detail can be disclosed.
3. Search the MiCOURT case portal for the order, bond, dismissal, sentence, or warrant that shaped the custody event.
4. Request the booking/release sheet through the Sheriff's official records process when documentary proof is needed.
5. If the sheet names another custodian, continue with OTIS, BOP, ICE, USMS, or the other county rather than treating the transfer as freedom.

Branch Jail Release Records

A useful records request names an existing record and a specific booking. Broad questions may require staff to perform research that Michigan FOIA does not require. The Sheriff-specific FOIA form is the official documentary route. Ask for electronic copies and nonexempt portions if some fields must be redacted. A request can identify the name, date of birth or booking number, and a narrow date range.

Request the booking and release or jail-register entry, including the booking date and time, arresting agency, charges at booking, court or case number, bond type and amount, release date and time, release reason or code, releasing authority, and receiving agency if a transfer occurred and that information is releasable. Ask for the booking photograph separately when it is needed to match the record. Not every field is automatically public, so the sound request seeks segregable portions instead of demanding the entire jail-management file.

Under MCL 15.235, the public body generally gives an initial response within five business days by granting, denying, partly granting, or issuing a permitted extension notice. That deadline does not guarantee production within five days. Fees are governed by the FOIA framework; the Sheriff does not publish a single flat price for a release sheet or booking photograph.

Branch Court Release Trail

Every Branch County adult criminal case starts in 3-A District Court. Misdemeanors remain there, while a qualifying felony can move to 15th Circuit Court after bind-over. This two-stage path matters because a person may have an early district docket and a later circuit case. Review the register of actions in time order for arraignment, bond, preliminary examination, bind-over, dismissal, plea or verdict, sentence, jail credit, probation, warrants, and discharge.

A court entry shows what a judge ordered. It may not show the time the person passed through the jail door after staff checked other holds, returned property, and finished processing. For strong historical proof, pair the Branch County Jail release sheet with the signed court order. If the exact legal disposition matters, obtain a certified copy from the correct clerk rather than relying only on an abbreviated docket label.

Bind-over

Transfer of a qualifying felony case from District Court to Circuit Court after the required finding.

Time served

A sentence outcome crediting confinement already completed; another case or probation may still continue.

Detainer

A hold or transfer request from another authority.

The end of one custodian's control and the start of another's, not community release.

Branch Jail Bond Releases

The official Branch County bond page describes cash-only, cash-or-surety, ten-percent, and personal-recognizance bonds. A ten-percent bond calls for ten percent of the face amount to be deposited at the jail. A personal-recognizance bond relies on the person's promise to appear rather than a cash deposit, even when the order states a value. A private surety agent is not a county employee.

Posting bond authorizes a path out of pretrial confinement. It does not decide guilt, erase the case, or establish final disposition. Jail staff still process the order and check any other valid hold. The county page also says all bookings carry a $12 booking fee and a warrant booking adds $10 per warrant, requested in addition to bond. Those amounts should be read as the County's current instruction. No broader consequence should be inferred from that wording.

For a past bond-out, compare three points: the court's bond order, the payment or recognizance route, and the jail's recorded release time. That chain avoids mistaking a bond decision for the moment physical custody ended.

Branch Jail Contact Details

The current official address controls because private listings still circulate the location of an older jail. Administration hours are not a published release schedule. The Sheriff's page says the jail operates continuously, but it does not state a regular release hour, exit door, weekend sequence, public waiting area, or property-return policy. Call about a particular event rather than filling those gaps with another county's practice.

“Open 24/7” describes facility operation. It does not promise that records staff, the public counter, or discharge processing runs on that same public schedule.

Why Branch Jail Addresses Differ

Branch County's current facility replaced an older jail that had once been a nursing home. WWMT reported a cost of $28 million and a planned capacity of about 220 beds after voters approved a millage in 2018. That history explains why stale sources still point to 580 Marshall Road. Current release inquiries should use the official Keith Wilhelm Drive address.

Coldwater also contains Lakeland Correctional Facility, an active MDOC prison, and the closed Florence Crane Correctional Facility. The shared city name can lead to the wrong custodian. Branch County Jail handles local pretrial and county-sentence custody. Lakeland handles state prisoners. Florence Crane closed in 2011 and is not a current release target. The agency named on the custody record determines the correct search.

After a Branch Jail Release

A confirmed community release may still be followed by probation or another court duty. Probation is court-ordered community supervision and differs from parole after state prison. If the person went to MDOC, use OTIS and treat the county departure as a transfer. A parole status later means release from prison into continued MDOC supervision. `DISCHRG` means MDOC jurisdiction ended for that sentence.

Federal and immigration paths are also system-specific. A transfer to USMS may precede BOP designation, while a transfer to ICE is release from Sheriff custody into federal civil immigration custody. Neither should be called community release. Juvenile matters remain outside this adult workflow because their records and placement details follow separate confidentiality rules.

Note: Attach an agency to every status, such as “released from Branch County Jail,” so a transfer is not mistaken for release from all custody.
